The Invention of Hugo Cabret (book review)

Last Wednesday, Jaime Burns and I were given the opportunity by Mr Aitken to get a few books that we could read over the Summer. We managed to get, between the two of us, around 24 books. I got

 Out of the thirteen books that I managed to get I have read 3 and am in the process of reading Animal Farm by George Orwell.

Jaime has done book reviews on the books that she has read so far and I thought that that was a good idea as we get to share our views of the book on our blogs and other readers can comment and tell us what they thought of the book that we wrote a review on. Even though the books are meant to be for Summer reading, I'm probably going to have to go back and get some more as they might all have been read by then.

The first book that I read was The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT 

This book was based around the orphan, Hugo, who went to live with his Uncle at the train station and he was all by himself after his uncle didn't come back on night and he didn't mind this all. His job is to oil and maintain the clocks like his uncle showed him, but more than that, his job is to protect the automaton that his father had fixed and kept.  But then his life becomes intertwined with a girl and the man that runs the toy booth after the man takes Hugo's fathers book. his life and secrets are put in jeopardy and he has to find a way to keep himself and the automaton safe after the girl-Isabella- finds out his hiding place and his secrets. 

WHAT MY THOUGHT OF THIS BOOKS ARE 

I did enjoy the book and it had a great story behind it. The way it was told, with around 150 pages of word and the rest of the book being made out of pictures, it gave you an idea of where Hugo lived, what he looked like and what the train station looked like. The pictures are drawn with such detail and look amazing in real life. 

During the book, I did get twisted up a little bit and didn't quite get what was happening but I got there in the end and it was a really good story of friendship and trust.  I enjoyed this book and enjoyed the picture that he had drawn to go along with the words that he had written. 

I recommend this book to read and I find that id you are into adventure and mystery you would enjoy this quite a bit. Age level would be any as you can really get into it at any age.

Fizzy-Bugsy Malone Play

This year for Passion Projects, I chose to do Musical Theatre. The play that we are doing in Bugsy Malone. It's set in New York and is mainly about the fighting between the two rival gangs, Dandy Dan's gang and Fat Sam's gang. The play is messy with all the cream pies and splurge guns but that makes it a whole lot more fun. My character is Fizzy. He is the caretaker janitor at Fat Sam's Grand Slam. He sweeps and cleans up after the gangs fight in the joint. I feel like after doing all of this and then there being another fight, he gets sick of it and starts to get very frustrated with the gangs fighting all of the time.

Fizzy's costume is quite simple. In most of the photos and the stage show that I have seen, he wears denim overalls and then underneath either an old flannel or a off white t shirt. Fizzy is a very humble character who wants to be a dancer and a singer not a cleaner at Fat Sam's. Fizzy always tries to show Sam that he can sing and dance in hopes that maybe Sam will give him a part in singing.

Pathways- English Scholarship

This year I have been give the opportunity to have an English Scholarship. We've been working out of two book and had to find things that we would most like to work on. In the In Perspective book (the first book that we got handed) I chose to do the Greek Gods as they are something that I love and wanted to find a little bit more about.

In the book there also was things like Religion, Lunar Calendars, Famous People like William Shakespeare and many other topics that would interest a lot of different people. We also got another book called The Elements of Eloquence.This book is all about how to turn the proper English phrase. This book isn't my cup of tea but it is very interesting to read. I'm about half way thorough and

So far, with my work, I am enjoying what we are doing and what we have been reading. It has been pretty fun during the past term and a half but it was also quite challenging. The bits that I found challenging were that I don't really like the Elements of Eloquence book but I'm going to read it anyway because I want to learn more about English.

I also found picking a choice on what to do for my In Perspective work. There were a few different choices that I could have picked and there were some that I absolutely hated reading about.

The power-point that I did I was very happy with the work that I did and the level that I completed it too.




I chose the topic that I found the most interesting and the topic that I really loved. I knew some stuff about this topic as I already did research but as I moved through the different gods, I found out some pieces of information that I didn't know and pieces that really shocked me. I really enjoyed learning about this and I'm glad that we were give the opportunity to do this. 

Pelvis- The pelvis is at the top of the legs and is set in between the abdomen and the thighs. 
Warlord- A warlord is a leader able to exercise military and usually the military are loyal to the warlord and not the state regime. 
Tyranny- Oppressive or cruel government or rule. 
Legendary- Remarkable enough for enough people to know you; being famous 
Star ship Hospital- Star ship Hospital was one of the fist children hospital that was built in New Zealand. 

Lucy Lawless fans have a week where they donate to charities  and do charitable acts. Lucy speaks out about child abuse, and is a member of the Star ship Foundation. She has been awarded the Order of Merit for services and to entertainment and to the community. 

I would help families that are in need and need help. I would also love to help the people that are in the Womens shelters. RSPCA I would also give donations to as they need to get food, toys and all things that the animals need to have to feel at home until they find a home for them. 

They can have a big impact on people everywhere. The way that the cat, the issues that they fix, who they help and why they did can touch peoples hearts as it makes them think about real life issues and the things that they can do to help the help their own community. The way that they act can have a huge impact on kids as they are still developing and things can stick in their brain better than it can with adult. 

Lucy Lawless inspire others in huge ways. She shows women that they can do whatever if they put their minds to it. She speaks up about child abuse in New Zealand, which doesn't happen enough. Lucy also is a member of the Star ship Foundation Board of Trustees in NZ. She has be voted The New Zealand Herald's Women of the year.

Anna Paquin- She gave to Children's  Hospital Los Angeles, Elton John AIDS Foundation, Make-A-Wish Foundation, The Art of Elysium, True Colours Fund

It applies to everything. It is a act that stops people from being able to deceive people
\when they sell something

may or may not benefit the people

The commission is empowered to  “legal requirements that an organization has to

Reporting a business

1. If you need to report a business, how do you do this?

If you need to make a complaint about a business's product that you think is not up to your standards

you can make a complaint to the Commerce Commission. They can talk to the business that you have a

problem with and they can get the business sorted out.

DTE

This week in DTE we have been  using the drawing tools on chrome to make drawings. Duh. last week we made a boat, which was quite fun to make. And then this week we ,made a little TV with a Peter Griffin in the middle of the screen. This was a fun activity to do but very time consuming as we had to make like 100 different INDIVIDUAL LINES. HELP ME. other than all the lines that we had to make i would have really enjoy this topic. and this drawing.

We have been also for the whole term doing the Typing.com website. This is to improve our typing and to try not get us to chicken peck. It is very fun to do and I am nearly finished the Beginner levels.
